Abstract

Subfertility is a major health issue affecting over 48.5 million couples around the world with the male factor accounting for about 50% of the cares owing to a decline in semen quality. Conventional semen analysis recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) is the cornerstone in the evaluation of male fertility status. It includes microscopic and macroscopic evaluation of the ejaculates which reflect the production of spermatozoa in the testis, the patency of the duct system, and the glandular secretory capacity. Many emerging techniques have been developed that enable improved sperm analysis. A small minority of infertile men have medically or surgically reversible causes of infertility. Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is the only potentially effective treatment for most causes of male infertility.
